London’s river is the Thames, right? Wrong. There are no less than 21 tributaries that flow into the Thames in Greater London. Some of these flow silently through their neighbourhoods, generally unnoticed by all but a few, but others have been buried under layers of streets and housing, and never see the light of day…

Probably the best-known of London’s lost rivers, the River Fleet was instrumental in the formation of old London. Now invisible to the naked eye, it has left its mark for those in the know.  Walking along the route of its lower reaches we will be walking in the footsteps of rampant Romans, The Artful Dodger and Oliver Twist, and that most memorable of Tudor monarchs - Queen Elizabeth I.
